I painted this cardinal after watching one land on a snow-dusted post in my mother’s backyard in Hope, Arkansas—a town where snow is as rare as a good friend who stays. It was January, and everything still felt okay. By February, that had changed.

This piece came from the quiet ache of betrayal, the fatigue of loss, and the stubborn act of holding on to beauty anyway. I painted it quickly, without overthinking—just what I saw. Or maybe what I needed to see.

Sometimes you have to take life, as Anne Lamott reminds us, bird by bird.
